Meet Eleanor Harvey, Kelleigh Ryan, and Alanna Goldie (Left to Right)

These three made up 3/4 of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Women's Foil team.

Haven't heard of this team? This is the highest ranked Canadian fencing squad for the last 10 years and these three made up the back bone of it for the entirety of that time. Kelleigh and Alanna have since retired but their legacy lives on through Eleanor and the next generation who are preparing for the Paris Olympics with their sights on achieving more historic moments for Team Canada.

Epic Fencing is lucky to have Eleanor continuing to train with us, Kelleigh coaching and running the admin, and Alanna joining the Board of Directors.

Some key moments in our Epic Olympians' history:

• In 2008, Alanna was the youngest Canadian to qualify for U17 and U20 World Championships at age 13
• In 2011, Kelleigh and Alanna were a part of the first Women's Foil team to make it to the quarter finals of the Senior World Championships. A result that was followed by numerous top 8 results. The team that was ranked 12th in 2011 moved all the way up to 5th by 2022.
• In 2014 and 2015, Eleanor made history by winning back-to-back silver medals at U20 World Championships. She and Alanna were ranked #1 and 2 in the season that year!
• In 2015, the three Epic women won gold at the Pan Am Games, with a home crowd cheering them on in Toronto, ON (see photo above!)
• In 2016, Eleanor became the "double whammy of goodness" girl by qualifying for the Olympics AND winning NCAAs on the same weekend. Later that year, she topped this up by achieving Canada's best result at the Olympics, defeating world #1, and finishing 7th!
• In 2017, Alanna won her 4th consecutive NCAA medal, a feat not many fencers have achieved!
• In 2018, Eleanor became the first women's foilist to win a Senior World Cup Medal. She has since gone on to win 4 more Senior World Cup medals between 2022 and 2023, since working with coach Alex. She moved up the ranks to #3 in the world!
• In 2019, Kelleigh won her 4th Pan Am Championships individual medal.
• In 2021, Kelleigh defeated two top 16 fencers to make the quarter finals of the Tokyo Olympics, and now holds the second best Canadian Olympic fencing result. In the team event, the women showed their resilience and teamsmanship by finishing 5th.
• In 2022, Kelleigh defeated the reigning world champion to achieve her first World Cup top 8, this result moved her to 9th in the World, a lifelong goal she had worked towards.
• In 2022, Kelleigh and Eleanor were on the team that defeated the USA at Pan Am Championships. Canada had been silver medalists at this competition for 12 years in a row prior! In 2023, Eleanor was on the team that followed this up with a second consecutive Pan Am Championships Gold! That weekend, Eleanor also won the individual event, finally defeating the reigning champion of 10 years.

We are excited to announce our 2023 Winter Fencing + STEM Camp! The camp will consist of half day STEM led by Engineering For Kids (EFK) and half day fencing! 

The camp is open to kids 7-11 looking to try fencing for the first time or fencers with less than 6 months fencing experience. 

Morning 9am-12pm

Master Machines: Explore the world of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering!  

Campers get your thinking hats on, you are introduced to the concepts of circuit design, building, and testing through various hands-on engineering activities. You will use the Engineering Design Process to design, create, test, and improve a variety of machines and mechanical systems. 

The young engineers will design, build, and test electric magnets and flashlights.  The fun continues as they explore the concept of force, trajectory, and friction through designing and building hydraulic arms, launchers, rubber band racers, and more! The best part, you take home all your builds to share with family and friends.  

Afternoon 12:30-4pm

Fencing! 

The fencing portion will introduce kids to fencing footwork, bladework, and strategy! They will also play games designed to develop physical literacy and cooperation. 

Location: EPIC Fencing Club – 3309 9 Street SE, Calgary

Ages: 7-11 (Fencers will be divided by age/experience on day one)

We are excited to announce that Epic has another Casino Fundraiser on December 3-4^th. This fundraiser is important for our club as last Casino raised $70 000. The money goes towards helping pay for the club’s facilities. For the fundraiser to be successful, we must fill all volunteer time slots.

Important Information for Volunteers

• No prior experience necessary, see below for job descriptions,
• If volunteering on both days, you must do the same role both days,
• You must attend the full time slot you signed up for. Unfortunately, we cannot split the shifts,
• Must be 18 years or older,
• All volunteers must present a government ID and volunteer form when checking in for your shift (see attached),
• All volunteer staff and charity workers are prohibited from playing casino games or gaming terminals (including slot machines, electronic table games and VLTs) where they are working for the duration of their licensed charity’s event,
• Volunteer staff and charity workers must not use or be under the influence of liquor, cannabis or illegal drugs at a casino event.

Positions Available

GENERAL MANAGER AND ALTERNATE GENERAL MANAGER

• The general manager is responsible for all aspects of the casino and operates the event in consultation with the games manager to ensure the casino is conducted in accordance with the CTCOG.
• The general manager ensures all volunteer staff/charity workers are present for the casino event prior to their scheduled shift.
• The general manager may temporarily perform the duties of any volunteer staff/charity worker. Should the position being covered not return in a reasonable period (example: one hour) or is not expected to return, the general manager may assign another volunteer staff/charity worker to the role (Discrepancy Report required).
• Prior to the end of the event, the general manager will sign off on all discrepancy reports in addition to the advisor or games manager.
• The general manager will ensure the casino facility licensee or designate provides a cheque at the end of the event for the cost of the advisor fees and concession fees.

BANKER

• The banker supervises the cash cage and is directly accountable to the general manager.
• The banker is responsible to ensure: the security and control of the chip/cash inventory during their shift; and the cashiers retain personal control of chips and cash while on duty.

CASHIER

• Accountable to the banker, the cashier provides services to casino patrons, exchanging casino chips for cash.
• The cashier must not: sell or exchange any currency for chips; conduct any cash outs over $200 without the transaction being witnessed by the general manager, banker or advisor; and accept chips from another casino facility.
• The cashier maintains the security of the chips and cash in their station while on duty, securing their station when not in use or on break.

CHIP RUNNER

• Using CasinoTrack, the chip runner acts as an intermediary between the charity and the casino facility: verifying the accuracy of chips while accepting, opening, closing or returning game tables on the floor; and ensuring chips are accurately transported to and from the chip bank and game tables.
• Note: The chip runner may assist the general manager during pull of drop boxes.

COUNT ROOM SUPERVISOR

• The count room supervisor is directly accountable to the general manager for supervision of count room procedures and count room staff and ensuring the count room is secured while on duty
• At the end of the count, the count room supervisor will generate the Master Revenue Report and Count Room Drop Box Verification on CasinoTrack.

SORTER

• The sorter is responsible for preparing the drop boxes for the count room team, including, emptying a drop boxes contents on the table; showing the camera the box is empty; and sorting the contents for the counter.

COUNTER

• The counter is responsible for, counting the contents of each individual box identified by the “Box ID Card”, reporting the totals to the recorders; and providing the bills to the amalgamator for final verification
• Note: The counter may assist the sorter.

RECORDER

• The recorder enters information provided by the counter into the CasinoTrack system for each box identified by the “Box ID Card”.

AMALGAMATOR

• The amalgamator is responsible for: performing the final count of the contents of each individual drop box identified by the “Box ID Card”, reporting the totals to the Count Room Supervisor; and placing cash of the same denomination in bundles of one hundred (where applicable) after the totals are verified from the first count.
